(very) Basically a VXD is a Virtual Device Driver. The V stands for Virtual, the X stands for Any Device (hence an X) and D is for Driver. Most of the time VXDs are the ones in charge of the communication between Windows and the hardware.

They are a quite low level topic. Matt Pietrek once said that '..VXD's are just DLLs that run in ring 0..' and that is quite true.
It's better if you understand some OS architecture to get the hang of VXDs. Nevertheless Iczelion provides a good kickstart with his VXD tutorials.
