Hi Randy,
I have cut and pasted your RandomAccessDemo source from the current version of AOA, and could not get it to compile.
The error is thus:
hla "RandomAccessDemo.hla"
Error in file "RandomAccessDemo.hla" at line 1 :
syntax error, unexpected $end, expecting DoOneValStmt.
Near: << >>
Make finished.
I remember in the past that the quotation marks that show up in PDF format often are not the same ones in text.

I cut and pasted the program from the html version of AOA and it compiled. Maybe you copied some extra characters besides the code.
Thanks Odyssey,
The html works for me also.

Note that you can grab the electronic versions (ASCII text) of all the example programs from Webster at http://webster.cs.ucr.edu/Page_hla/0_hla_dnld.html
Cutting and pasting program text into Framemaker (the word processing system used for AoA) often converts quotes and apostrophies to funny characters, so beware of cutting and pasting from the book.
Cheers,
