Hi all.

There is a new SOLAR OS version at www.oby.ro
http://www.oby.ro/os_main.html

add->above url might not be up 24/7 so a more reliable location is:

http://www.hostileencounter.com/os_main.html

What is new:
-------------------------
Multiple desktops ;)
Tasklist/bar with minimize/restore
HDD Fat32 Explorer is improved
Keyboard driver improved
API is evolving fast.

Works pretty well under vmware or booted from a floppy on real hardware
and will not attempt to write on your HDD

Source code is included.

Also the first version released under GPL license.

GPL? :(

Yes GPL...

is there any problem?

Great !

It works well under Bochs also. Thanks

Nah, not really Bogdan - for OSes and such, GPL is a reasonable license. I would never use it myself though, it's generally pretty ugly >_<

add: above server might not be up 24/7, a more reliable host is still available at:
http://www.hostileencounter.com/os_main.html

BTW: How can i make Bosch run faster?

Vmware is a LOT faster ...

Nah, Bosch is too damn slow... i have to detect it and do something about
maximum is 2-3fps on Boschs while VMware will run circles arround it at 24-90fps

Try changing the Simulated Instructions up in boshsrc.txt or whatever your ini file is called.

Also, the VGA update could be lowered.

ips: 10000000
vga_update_interval: 3000

if your cpu is fast enough, increase the ips. if you want fps, lower the vga_update.

bochs *is* a lot slower than vmware, since bochs emulates everything while vmware tries to run as much code as it can directly (well, with some fixing-up and stuff of course, but still).

Great !

It works well under Bochs also. Thanks

oh well; how have you got the 16bit-colormode running in bochs? is there any special vga-bios out there? could you tell me a refernece? thanks!

i use :

vgaromimage: bios/VGABIOS-lgpl-latest

in startup file, it looks like this bios supports 16bit colors in vesa 2.0 mode

oh well; the current version is 2.1.1, i have 2.0.2 - i'll update and try again.

With the latest version of Bochs and the needed tweaking in startup.txt ;)

I was able to make Bochs run even in 32bits up to 1280x1024 ...
Vmware stops at VESA 65536 colors -- ie can NOT do 32bits colors

Of course Bochs is damn slow while vmware is blazin fast --

But it is a matter of concept & implementation
As f0dder rightfully stated it

Tweaking Bochs's setinngs only added marginal speed increases...
I wonder how many simulated IPS (instructions per seccond) can my 1.3G Athlon (non XP) do?
Well, looks like it is running a simulated 10Mhz maximum CPU in Bochs

i was able to run both SOLAR OS and Menuet OS in Bochs
VMware's limitation to 16bits color modes in VESA is "funny" at least
