If I want to draw a personalized border around an edit control, do I have to set it to CS_PARENTDC and draw in its parent window?

You can process WM_NCPAINT messages. Check out MSDN for details:

If you also want the border to be drawn outside the limits of the control's size, then you will need CS_PARENTDC.

Hope that helps! :)

This seems like exactly what i been looking to do but included inside of an dll.  How would you stop painting of a window borders than to do what i need to do in the background than release it so it can continue executing.  This is my first dll and working only from an recent idea by seaching the board.  Could you check out my post about manipulation.
