is it just my impression or is RSA really pretty much useless when the modulus isn't large enough, since it all boils down to factoring it.

so, then starting from what modulus size can it be considered secure against the highest practically possible (ie. available to a company or institution) computational power available today?
and to what extent will that "threshold modulus size" grow in the near future?
