Is there any way to receive an event when a character arrives in the UART?

The discontinued WMCOMMNOTIFY event apparently did this before it was discontinued.

AFAIK you can listen on an associated socket.

Is anybody know how to open the port on WinXP? I have 2 computer and it is conected using LAN. I want to connect it with a printer cable too but I cannot access hardware port on Windows XP (it is port 0x3f8 LPT printer port).

You open it just like a file. The file name is the device name like COM! or LPT1.

You send data to the printer by usings WriteFile.
