linker errors unless I link with msvcrt.lib (which is an MFC dll and sacraligeous by all accounts) :)

heehee. You really have to read this thread of yours sometime :grin:.
The way around those 'unresolved' errors, is to use 'd3dx8d.lib' - *not* 'd3dx8.lib'. This will use the 'd3dx8d.dll' which you either get from MSDN (for the latest version), or the older one from Calebs' '*.zip'.
'msvcrt.lib' is unneccessary.

You should have seen some of the bonehead moved I've done programming in DX8 :) Yesterday I couldn't get something working so I emailed scronty and I had syntax wrong. Stuff like that happens to everyone man :)
