Hello to all hardware experts :)
I bought a used IBM Thinkpad A31p (nice device anyway) and everything works fine, except the onboard AC97 sound. Its not present under windows and even the DOS based IBM doctor tool tells, that the sound device has state "failed".

Could a single chip on the mainboard be broken? Maybe in result of some electrical trouble with the external audio jacks?

Have you made sure it's enabled in BIOS?

yes, it is possible to kill just one chip on the mobo;

i think my brother managed to only anihilate the two rear outputs of his soundboard, front channel works fine.

the "transformation" of an integrated circuit into a "desintegrated" one is usually silent :D (i like this joke , hope it works fine in english)
