i made a simple program in c++ with only one main function...i noticed in my debugger it shows a function call before it enters CRTmain function.....is there anyway i can distinguish these functions from actual functions in the source code so i dont waste my time figureing out what it is ?

Usually you should debug while there is a PDB symbol database.
When I want to inspect the release-build, I put an "int 3" like this:

void BenchBreakpoint(){
__asm{
int 3;
}
}

...
void main(){
...
BenchBreakpoint();
..
}
