What was the goal? creating the mask pattern alone or designing a full rotary encoder?

Using gray code does it (have) to start with one? Just wondering how they can have nice rounded figures, like counting up to exactly 3000 pulses per turn etc. where presumably the final count must be only one digit move away from the first count. (if you understand what I mean)

Your results leave a small gap at N,S,E, & west. I don't understand! , Is the count reset at these points?
